Website Takes on Hidden Airline Fees

Cited: CNN

MadAsHellAboutHiddenFeesDid you know that September 23 was “Mad As Hell Day”?  Well, according to a group of consumer and professional travel organizations that have banded together to oppose hidden airline fees, it was.

To mark the day, the American Society of Travel Agents, the Business Travel Coalition and the Consumer Travel Alliance submitted a petition with more than 50,000 signatures collected via MadAsHellAboutHiddenFees.com to the Department of Transportation in support of a proposed rule that would require airlines to clearly inform consumers about fees for optional services.

Thursday, September 23, was the last day of a public comment period on a series of enhanced airline passenger protections proposed by the agency in June. The DOT expects to issue a final rule in spring 2011.

“It is absolutely imperative that consumers have the opportunity that they’ve had in the past to make comparative price decisions, to understand the total cost, the all-in price,” said Paul Ruden, ASTA’s senior vice president for legal and industry affairs.

The Mad As Hell group also supports the DOT’s proposal to require airlines to provide the same information about optional airline fees to the distribution systems used by online and brick-and-mortar travel agencies.  About 50%-60% of airline revenue earned in the United States comes through these independent distributors, Ruden said.

The Air Transport Association of America, the nation’s largest airline trade group, also plans to submit detailed comments about the proposed rules to the DOT on Thursday.

“We are working to provide more transparency, making it easier for customers to make decisions. Those recommendations will be further identified [Thursday], but there will be some of the DOT recommendations that simply are not practical or efficient,” said David Castelveter, the ATA’s vice president of communications.

“Let’s not lose sight of the fact that the airlines today do provide a high level of transparency on their websites,” he said.

The fees themselves are not the issue for the Mad As Hell organizations, but they say consumers must be able to compare prices of all-inclusive fares across airlines.

Off-Topic Breach: Have you purchased a vehicle that turned out to be defective? Are you experiencing problems that seriously impair the vehicle’s use, value or safety?  The California Lemon Law has created recourse for buyers to receive proper compensation when their vehicles have persistent and hazardous problems.  One group of lemon law lawyers has the experience and the legal knowledge to give you the lemon law help California you need and how it applies to your situation.

“[The fees] do reflect an increase in cost in air travel, for the most part. That said, the airline industry is an economic wasteland,” Ruden said. “It has to have a means of functioning economically. The economy requires it and the public requires it.”

Consumer fee outrage has been mounting as airlines increasingly “unbundle” charges for services that historically were included in the price of a ticket.

In the second quarter of 2010, airlines collected $2.1 billion in ancillary fees, which includes charges for checked bags, ticket changes, pet transportation and other fees, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

That figure represents a 15% increase from the same quarter last year. Baggage fee revenue is up 33% for the second quarter year over year.

————————————————————————

My Take: Well, I did not make it to the website in time to get my John Hancock on that petition, but I believe it’s a good one.  I also don’t travel by plane that often, but if I did, I would want to know about any additional BU they would tack on my ticket price.

They probably would’ve gotten more traffic if they would’ve gotten someone that does web hosting reviews or even SEO services.  Well, maybe not the hosting reviews.  But if they could have gotten all the best SEO Service, they definitely would’ve gotten more traffic on your website and more signatures.

I think the cloud hosting or web hosting reviews are more about who the server is and not about the web traffic to the website.  The SEO services more like putting hedging your local newspaper, except that it is for the search bots that crawl around for the search engines to find.  For example, there is a senior style forum on the Internet that you may not know about and the services bring them up on page one of Google, Bing or even MSN.  To further this example, if you are looking for green issues, is a senior website has information on it.  So if you do a search on green issues, the senior website will be one of the websites you bring up because of the SEO services.

Visiting Tibet

As a part of China that was not opened up for tourism by the general public until a few decades ago, Tibet remains one of the most visually striking areas of the country. Foreign visitors to the area must not only provide a proper passport but must also often obtain an additional China visa for visiting the secluded region. Tibet has lately acquired a few five-star hotels which might surprise some visitors but experiencing traditional Tibetan culture alongside modern conveniences is certainly possible for anyone who decides to step further into China by experiencing Tibet’s Buddhist heritage.

A Colorful Driving Vacation

Cited: MSNBC

Mount MitchellDriving the auspicious and invigorating road to North Carolina’s Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak in the eastern United States, will make you party to the fresh risk air, panoramic views and the changing colors of the ash and poplar trees that line either side of this 75-year-old Blue Ridge Parkway that is one of the countries great autumn drives.

The fall foliage season, when the changing palette of deciduous trees is in blazing bloom, is now starting. And the way to maximize your intake of color is to map out a driving route. In September, October, and — in some spots — even November, color seekers can visit 31 states and drive more than 3,000 miles of national scenic byways, plus thousands of other scenic roads.

Some nature lovers, like former Shenandoah National Park guide Hazel Mills, can’t wait to buckle up and get up close and personal with the purple dogwoods and deep burgundy leaves of the Virginia creepers.

“It’s like a basketful of fall chrysanthemums in every color,” she says. “Red and yellow, purple and deep burgundy. When the afternoon sun hits the hickory, it looks exactly like gold, absolutely breathtaking.”

Off-Topic Breach: With the philosophy of aggressive, ethical representation and the committed to innovative and creative solutions for every client the Denver criminal attorneys will fight for your rights.  They are an experienced team of legal professionals that understand the needs and concerns of their clients.  Because every case and client is unique, any criminal lawyer Denver CO can use their expertise and experience to approach cases in a “team manner” if necessary. As part of our team, we have three attorneys that defend clients in criminal matters.Mount Mitchell 2

Others, like Mike Boutin, owner of Maine-based Northwoods Outfitters, like to take country drives surrounded by mountains bursting with yellow beeches, scarlet maples, and purple witch hazel around Moosehead Lake. He also loves one of the season’s biggest local adventures — back-road moose safaris.

“It doesn’t get better than pulling over to see a huge brown male moose crash through a riot of bright red and yellow leaves,” says Boutin.

Certain areas of the country — the Northeast corridor, the Southeast, along the Appalachian Mountains, and much of the Midwest — produce the most striking and vibrant colors because of mild autumn days and cool (but not freezing) evenings. If daytime temperatures are too warm for an extended period of time, colors are less intense.

If you’re planning a fall foliage trip, choose your route based not only on the timing of nature’s fiery color display, but also around available activities. Horseback ride through the orange hickory trees in Shenandoah National Park. Or stand beneath a quivering golden aspen at Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra while peering through a dusty window in Bodie, the best-preserved ghost town in California.

Behind the wheel is still the best way to cover the most ground and take in the most beautiful colors you will ever see.

————————————————————————

My Take: I definitely agree with this article.  The best way to see the country is behind the wheel of the car or on a good motorcycle.  If you want to take a vacation like this you would need to learn to ride motorcycle or drive a car before you could.  There is a good academy driving school NY where you can learn to drive.

If you really wear your car out and end up with a worn-out wrecked car, you can always sell it for cash.  It is a good way to get from your vacation money back or you could trade that wrecked car in for another one.  But whether your car survives or not, you will have an exciting trip that will give you memories for a lifetime.  You might even find a few things to take home to decorate your house with.

Deep in the country, you will find old-time craftsman that still make their own furniture, dishes and utensils and fixtures for their home.  Country décor is beautiful!  Just put up a little rustic lighting to accentuate it in your dining table with your handmade decorative country plates on it will look absolutely fantastic.

A Cheap Vacation to Las Vegas Part 1

Cited: ABC News

Las VegasSavvy travelers know that if they are willing to look in the right places, Las Vegas is a city full of bargains and amazing freebies. They also know that Las Vegas is the city where you can lose your shirt and your plane ticket home and just roll the dice.

While there might not be such a thing in life as a free lunch, there are free shows, snacks and even a free chance at striking it rich.

In that spirit, we have put together a list of some of our favorite free activities in Las Vegas.

“There’s more free stuff here than basically anyplace,” said Anthony Curtis, publisher and owner of the discount tourist guide Las Vegas Advisor and one of the foremost experts on cheap Las Vegas. “We’ve been on the bandwagon for two decades that Vegas is the place to go for the cheapest vacations. The discounts on everything are just amazing.”

Curtis notes that everything from meals to hotel rooms are subsidized by tourist gambling dollars. If you keep your gambling budget in check, everything else can be a steal.

The best example of that might be with the dining deals. Consider the $6.95 steak dinner at Ellis Island that includes a 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, salad, garlic green beans, choice of potato, and a micro-brewed beer. Don’t worry; we will get to the absolutely free items in a second.

“Each casino needs to do something bigger and better than the last one. They tear one down, put a new one up. It has to have some type of attraction to get people to come to that casino,” adds Anne Banas, executive editor of travel website SmarterTravel. “That’s why you see so many of these free shows to lure people. Of course, you have to walk through the casino to get there.”

To find the best deals, do some planning upfront. The biggest mistake people make when they get to Las Vegas, Curtis said, is that they haven’t thought about what they are going to do.

“They get here and there’s sensory overload from the ads, the billboards and all the things that are flashing at them. They don’t know what to do,” he said. “Once you get here, I would open everything, in terms of freebie magazines, things they put you in your room, things they want you to sign up for at the club booths. I would do all of those things. People tend to shy away from giving your name out. In Vegas it’s the other way around. You want to give your name out.”

Ten Best Free Things to Do in Las Vegas

Fountains of Bellagio: More than a thousand fountains at the Bellagio dance to music ranging from Pavarotti to Sinatra. Sold as the most ambitious, choreographically complex water feature ever conceived, this free show is sure to amaze you. Each performance is unique in its expression and interpretation and ranges from opera to classical to Broadway tunes. Depending on time of day, the show starts every 15 or 30 minutes in front of the casino.

“That fountain show at the Bellagio is just absolutely insane. It’s gorgeous. I think it’s one of the coolest things you can do in this city,” Curtis said.

The M Resort has a free contest for gamblers to try and pick which NFL teams win each week. The first prize each week, $5000 and you don’t have to risk a penny! You also get a chance to win $150,000. Of course, the odds are pretty slim to win, but it is free! Even Coast casinos have a weekly football contest with $30,000 in prize.

My Take: Well, that is great if you have the money to get to Vegas. But if you don’t have the money to get to Vegas, what can you do? Vegas is one of those places is always changing hands. Commercial mortgage brokers may collect the money there. If you are looking to purchase commercial property, you can get commercial real estate financing in Vegas in nothing flat.

Vegas is all for the reason why many people have credit card debt! They go and have fun and forget about the consequences of spending so much. When I get home I have to work for debt settlement services just to recoup. I never could understand how anybody could live there and not be in debt up to their eyeballs. People who live there have a lot of intestinal fortitude, in my opinion.

Too many people have to hire collection harassment lawyers after they have taken a vacation in Vegas. Do not get me wrong, not everybody who goes to Vegas gets too far into debt. But there are enough that need to hire harassment attorneys because they went overboard with your credit card in Vegas.

Circus Acts: Experience the world’s largest permanent circus … above a casino floor at the aptly-named Circus Circus. There are acrobats, trapeze acts, jugglers and all your other favorite circus acts in the middle of the casino’s kid-friendly midway. Performances start at 11 a.m. daily and go well past a toddler’s bedtime.

Flamingo Wildlife Habitat: Appropriately enough, the Flamingo resort is home to a flock of live Chilean Flamingos. These birds, along with a collection of other feathered friends, hang out in the hotel’s very own wildlife habitat, or the closest thing to it on The Las Vegas Strip. There are also swans, ducks, koi and turtles relaxing by the waterfalls and the tropical foliage.

Cheap Las Vegas Vacations

Ethel’s Chocolates Factory Tour: Free, self-guided factory tours show every step of candy-making in the chocolate factory.

“It’s something to do that doesn’t have to do with gambling. It’s in a little quiet area and you get free samples at the end, so you can’t argue with that,” Banas said. “It’s a great thing, especially if you are there are with kids.”

After seeing the sweets, check out the adjacent Botanical Cactus Garden, Nevada’s largest. Based on the English landscape model of naturalistic design, Ethel’s Botanical Cactus Garden features four acres of drought-tolerant ornamentals, cacti and other succulents. More than 300 species of plants can be found on the grounds, half being cacti.

Rio Masquerade Show in the Sky: This Carnival-like show is unlike anything else in Vegas. Performers ride floats that hang down from tracks on the ceiling of the casino. There is music and dancing, and plenty of free trinkets are thrown from the floats. Each unique show brings a new level of energy and excitement to an already-loud casino floor. Shows are hourly from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. For $12.95, guests can actually get a spot on some floats and participate in the show.

Off-Topic Breach: Do you need new HPS bulbs?  Well, this online vendor is been committed to selling you the most energy efficient lighting products sent 1982.  They offer an array of environmentally responsible lighting choices such as LED grow light, LED lightbulbs, LED Christmas lights and even aquarium lighting that differs from ordinary lightbulbs because aquarium bulbs do not promote algae blooms in your fish tank in standard bulbs will.

“That’s like a 12-13 minute production,” Curtis said. “These are actors, these are real performers up there singing and dancing. Some of these are fairly elaborate.”

Fremont Street Experience: Located in Downtown Las Vegas, the Fremont Street Experience offers free nightly shows featuring 12.5 million lights and 550,000 watts of amazing sound. The show is often paired with free concerts and other special events. It’s a modern twist on old-school Vegas. The show starts every hour on the hour from 7 p.m. to midnight. On the east end of the street, walk through the outdoor Neon Museum, this hosts some of the old hotels’ neon signs.

Sirens of TI: It used to be a standard pirate show; the British fighting the pirates. But then Treasure Island rebranded itself as the hipper TI and added some sex appeal to its pirate show. Enter the Sirens of TI. There’s still plenty of fighting and explosives but now some scantily-clad women are in the mix. The plot, if you need one, is that the sirens lure a band of renegade pirates into their cove with powerful and captivating melodies. Shows are every 90 minutes each night.

Best Free Las Vegas Attractions

MGM Grand Lion Habitat: The lion has been a part of the MGM heritage for many years, beginning with the legendary Leo, whose roars have welcomed generations of moviegoers to epics of the silver screen. Now visitors to the MGM Grand casino can see several African lions and cubs. The lions live in custom accommodations on an 8.5-acre ranch 12 miles from the casino but are brought into the hotel’s habitat where 35-foot glass walls allow guests to view the lions from all angles. The area is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Volcano at the Mirage: This is the freebie that really started it all. The volcano at the Mirage erupts at the top of each hour from 8 p.m. to midnight, spewing smoke and fire 100 feet above the water. But this isn’t the same show from the casino’s opening in 1989. The Mirage has joined forces with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Indian tabla sensation Zakir Hussain and Fountains of Bellagio design firm WET to create an all-new audio/visual spectacle.

My Take: All of these things are very enticing, but I still need the money get there.  It very well could be cheaper than fishing charters Key West.  That would involve either driving or flying to Florida, which could be even more expensive.  A Key West Florida fishing charter could actually be cheaper if you go in a group.  I guess it depends on how much of a gambler you truly are as to whether or not you would go to Vegas or Florida.  I would choose fishing over Vegas because I enjoy fishing; however I doubt that I would go to Florida to pitch.

I think I would rather use the money to improve my garage floor or even to lose belly fat, both of which can cost less than a trip to Vegas or Florida.  In each of these cases it also depends on whether you lose belly fat for men or women and whether you’re using interlocking tile or garage floor paint as to which is cheaper.

Vacationing in Las Vegas really depends on what each individual wants for vacation.  So if you want to go to Vegas, you now have the information on how to make your Vegas vacation cheaper.

10% Increase in Thanksgiving Airfares

Cited: USA Today

Airline TravelIf you are planning to fly over the Thanksgiving holiday, you will find that airfare has gone up 10% since last year.  Also, the days you travel just might make a significant difference in your wallet as well.

The average domestic airfare over the November holiday is $384 round trip, up 10 percent compared with last year, according to Travelocity, the online travel agency, which reviewed ticket prices. Travelers could end up paying as much as $170 more for the average priced ticket if they fly out the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and return on Sunday, vs. shifting their itinerary by a couple of days.

During the recession, “People may have put Thanksgiving travels on the back burner, and it’s possible this year they’re ready to take those Thanksgiving trips again,” says Genevieve Shaw Brown, Travelocity’s senior editor. “There’s going to be a lot of competition for those lowest-priced seats, so it’s important that people (book) as far ahead as possible and be as flexible as possible to get a decent fare.”

Holiday surcharges will also affect cost. Some carriers are tacking on an extra $30 for flying on peak travel days such as the Sunday and Monday after Thanksgiving. “Think about the surcharge basically as a fare increase,” Brown says. “You’re going to pay more to travel on a more desirable day.”

Airlines slashed fares and flights in 2009 to weather a steep travel dip spurred by the economic downturn and the outbreak of the H1N1 virus. But this year, fares have been on the rise, as more passengers return to the air. And airlines are increasing the number of domestic seats by just 2 percent in November compared with a year ago, to make sure availability doesn’t outstrip demand.

Off-Topic Breach: There is a website that offers only organic and natural skin care products from reputable manufacturers with a track record purity, quality and efficiency.  In fact, they offer a variety of Hollybeth skin care products from shampoo to put balm to pregnancy kits at reasonable rates.

“Typically when airlines see heavy demand” and mostly full planes, they add flights, says Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com. “They’ve been very reluctant to do that, because they really don’t know what’s going to happen in the next six months in the general economy and in travel.” So don’t count on last-minute sales. Travel experts predict there will be few, if any.

Be flexible with your dates. Consider flying out on Thanksgiving Day and coming back the following Tuesday, for example, when the average domestic fare is $293, according to Travelocity.

And if you’re flying to or from communities with several airports, “Look for which one is going to yield the lowest price,” Brown says.

Seaney also noted that the connecting flights can be 25%-45% cheaper than taking a direct flight going to the same destination.  However, it could be difficult to get another flight if you miss your connecting flight.

————————————————————————

My Take: I do not need to worry about the cost of a flight.  All my family is right here in Phoenix with me.  However, there are hundreds or thousands of people who have family scattered across the country and may want to visit them for Thanksgiving or even Christmas.  Of course, Halloween is just around the corner so you could probably send 2010 sexy Halloween costumes as an early Christmas present.  Or even better, why not send Avatar costumes, of course the costumes fit human size and not the 10-12’ size of the real creatures.

With Thanksgiving not far behind Halloween, you might want to consider sending maybe brass bells as a Thanksgiving gift that they can ring in the holiday season.  You might also consider sending a brass compass so they can find their way home in the cold winter.

And if you finally decide to stay home this holiday season, you can always enjoy a good movie download.  And if you happen to be one of those people that are in the old movies, you can always download old movies online as well.

Cruise Ships Focus On Single Passengers in 2010

cruise shipSource: The Associated Press

Single travelers will be pleased to learn that beginning this year charges for cruise ship rooms designed for solo travelers on the Norwegian Epic will not carry supplemental fees for solo passengers as in the past, but brace yourself for higher prices to cover better entertainment, water parks, and other new perks.

“I think it’s genius,” said Cynthia Boal Janssens, editor and chief blogger at AllThingsCruise.com. “I’m amazed with so many new ships coming on line that this hasn’t been done sooner. Lots of single people cruise and want to cruise, but right now, if you are going on a cruise as a single person and you occupy a double cabin, they charge you an additional fee for doing that, sometimes as much as 200 percent.”

The Epic, which launches this summer, will offer 128 studios for singles. The cabins open onto a lounge area where solo travelers can socialize.

Paul Motter, editor at CruiseMates.com, said he thinks the single studios “will take off. We have a whole message board on CruiseMates for people seeking cruise companions. It’s a huge potential market.”

Motter said another emerging trend in cruises is more brand-name entertainment. For years, mediocre musical revues with names like “Salute to Broadway” were standard fare on ships, to the point where they “kind of became a joke,” said Motter.

In contrast, the Epic will feature Blue Man Group and Second City improv shows. Royal Caribbean’s megaship, Oasis of the Seas, which launched last fall, offers a complete production of “Hairspray.”

“Hairspray” is “the first time a cruise ship has fully licensed a Broadway production. And it’s a really good production, on par with a national touring company,” Motter said.

Oasis was the “it” ship of 2009, attracting enormous publicity as the largest cruise ship ever built. It carries 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew members, with facilities that include an ice rink, golf course, volleyball and basketball courts, a 1,300-seat indoor theater and seven “neighborhoods,” including a boardwalk and a mini-Central Park. There is so much to do onboard, that when the ship pulls into a port, “a lot of people don’t get off,” said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com.

The cruise industry will launch a dozen new ships this year, but Brown said, “Nothing will compete with Oasis.”

Ships debuting in 2010 include a sister ship of Oasis called Allure of the Seas, a new Queen Elizabeth from Cunard, and Celebrity Eclipse, the third in a series of Celebrity ships that started with the Solstice in 2008 and the Equinox in 2009.

Despite all these new ships coming onto the market during a recession, CLIA lines have managed to keep them full. CLIA said ships in 2009 sailed at 104 percent capacity on average, meaning that every room was occupied, and some rooms were shared by more than two people.

At the same time, the number of passengers keeps increasing: 13.01 million people cruised on CLIA ships in 2008, 13.44 million in 2009 and a projected 14.3 million will sail in 2010.

“Maybe we are not recession-proof, but we are recession-resistant,” said Richard Sasso, CEO of MSC Cruises and marketing director of CLIA.

One way cruises have kept ships full is by dramatically increasing the number of international passengers, to make up for slow growth in the North American market. The number of passengers from outside North America has doubled to more than 3 million a year since 2003, while the number of U.S. and Canadian passengers has increased by just 30 percent to 10.29 million.

Discounts have brought customers in, too. Cruise prices go down when demand is weak — just like airfare — until every cabin is filled.

But the low prices of 2009 are starting to disappear. “Fares are going up, for sure,” said Brown, the CruiseCritic editor.

One sign of change: More passengers are booking farther in advance. In 2009, the average booking window for a cruise was 4.6 months before the departure date, and 39 percent of passengers were booking their trips less than four months out, Sasso said.

For 2010, the average booking window has already increased to five months out, and only 30 percent of clients are booking less than four months before their departure.

What does this mean for consumers?

“As the ship fills up, the prices go up,” said Motter, the CruiseMates.com editor. “They give you the best prices six months to a year out, and at the very end, if there are still empty cabins, they discount them. The best way to get the best deal on a cruise is to book early. Almost all the cruise lines offer price guarantees, so if you see a price lower than what you booked, they will honor that.”

Paying for extras
On the other hand, you can still find last-minute bargains in places where the market is “really soft,” said Brown. “Eastern Mediterranean, Greek Isles, Turkey. For the Mexican Riviera, I’m still seeing $299 departures on seven-day trips.”

Don’t forget to check social media when planning a cruise. More cruise companies and cruise Web sites are using Twitter and Facebook to highlight deals and trips. Cunard even has a YouTube channel where fans can watch construction progress on the new Queen Elizabeth, as well as videos of James Taylor performing on another Cunard ship, Queen Mary 2.

Another long-term trend in cruising is the increase in family friendly programs and attractions. In the last 10 years, the median age of cruisers has dropped from 57 to 47, according to Bob Sharak, executive director of the Cruise Lines International Association, an industry group with 25 cruise lines representing 97 percent of cruise capacity in North America.

“Multigenerational groups — the groups that bring adults, kids and grandkids — are bringing down the average age,” said Mimi Weisband, spokeswoman for Crystal Cruises.

One thing younger passengers will love are the water parks on many new ships. Carnival Dream, which launched last year, has an aqua park called WaterWorks with a 300-foot-long water slide, the longest water slide at sea.

A new Disney ship, the Dream, launching a year from now in January 2011, will have a 765-foot-long water coaster, the AquaDuck, that will wrap around the perimeter of the ship’s top deck, with one loop jutting 13 feet over the side of the ship, 150 feet above the ocean.

Other innovative features on the Disney Dream include virtual portholes for windowless staterooms that will offer live views of the sea and sky from video cameras mounted around the ship. The Dream will also have an adult lounge called Skyline with changing backdrops offering views of famous skylines around the world.

Cruises also keep offering more and more sophisticated programming. In late 2009, Celebrity ships launched a series of enrichment seminars and activities called Celebrity Life. In addition to fitness classes and spa treatments, the programs include cooking classes, wine-tastings, stargazing, scrapbooking and lectures on art and history.

Cruise itineraries keep changing too. Crystal Cruises’ new port calls include Kuwait City, Bandar Abbas in Iran, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Sevastopol in the Ukraine and Port Elizabeth in South Africa, with new excursions that include South African wineries and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Princess cruise ships will visit 17 new ports in the next two years, including Abu Dhabi, Tangiers in Morocco, and Xiamen, on the southeastern coast of China. A “Highlights of Germany” tour offered by Princess this year will include two nights in the town of Oberammergau to see a passion play that villagers only perform once a decade.

Janssens, the AllThingsCruising editor, says river tours of Europe are also increasingly popular. “They’re replacing the bus tour of Europe,” she said.

Brown of CruiseCritic agreed, adding that ships designed for river cruising are “much more stylish than they used to be,” with “much nicer cabins, tech toys like DVD players, French balconies, elaborate furnishings, and better food.”

Janssens said that the small and medium-sized ships from lines like Silversea, Star Clippers and Crystal are especially appealing for older, more traditional travelers.

“They may not have big-name shows, you don’t have all the razzle-dazzle, but there’s a lot of elegance with this type of cruising — lovely dinners and you meet so many well-traveled people,” Janssens said. “They tend to be more luxurious, and you go to interesting places that the big ships can’t reach, where there aren’t 10,000 people in port.”

While megaships like Oasis may get the headlines, Janssens theorized that “people who like small ships are becoming even more loyal to them as big ships get bigger.”

My Take: Personally, I’d rather be a Los Angeles court reporter than the owner of a travel agency right now.  The industry is among the slowest to recovery from 911 and the ensuing economic meltdown linked to the housing market.  Every travel agent I know says they’ve had to take on “second” careers just to make ends meet.

California’s economic crisis is among the most severe and doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of a recovery in my book.  Obama’s announcement this week to offer tax credits to small businesses is not a new idea and every small business up and down the state from Redwood City CA criminal lawyers to the traveling LA court videographer would have to see hard financial data show why now is the time to start think about expanding or hiring more employees just to get a tax break.

On the other hand, perhaps a cruise is the anecdote for a sluggish economy.  Hedonistic business owners would say seek out pleasure first and the business will follow, and even if it doesn’t follow, you’ll have a good time while it lasted, right?

Heating Up the Bed at the Holiday Inn

Source: Reuters

The International hotel chain Holiday Inn has announced it will soon begin offering a trial human bed-warming service at three hotels in England.

If requested, a willing staff-member at two of the chain’s London hotels and one in the northern English city of Manchester will dress in an all-in-one fleece sleeper suit before slipping between the sheets.

“The new Holiday Inn bed warmers service is a bit like having a giant hot water bottle in your bed,” Holiday Inn spokeswoman Jane Bednall said in an e-mailed statement.

The bed-warmer is equipped with a thermometer to measure the bed’s required temperature of 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit).

Can I Get a Story With That? It’s not clear what the requirements are for the job of “bed warmer,” but obviously there can be no room for allergies to fleece or squeamish attitudes.  I’d suggest the next step for real in-room comfort is to have a real live film guide come in prior to your arrival and select a great flick for you from any one of the free movie download sites online and have it cued up and ready to go when you climb into that nice warm bed.  And, if you feel lonely, you can ask the bed warmer to watch the movie with you.  Also, how about a list of great scence fiction movies online to download for after your guide leaves, a hot batch of buttered popcorn next to your bed, and a personal ironer to come in and press your fancy lowrise jeans for the next days events?

Holiday Inn said the warmer would be fully dressed and leave the bed before the guest occupied it. They could not confirm if the warmer would shower first, but said hair would be covered.

Florence Eavis, Holiday Inn spokeswoman told Reuters that the “innovative” bed-warming method was a response to Britain’s recent cold weather and marked the launch of 3,200 new Holiday Inns worldwide.

She could not explain why the beds were not being warmed by hot water bottles or electric-blankets, but admitted the human method was quirky.

Holiday Inn are promoting the service with the help of sleep-expert Chris Idzikowski, director of the Edinburgh Sleep Center, who said the idea could help people sleep.

“There’s plenty of scientific evidence to show that sleep starts at the beginning of the night when body temperature starts to drop,” he said. “A warm bed — approximately 20 to 24 Celsius — is a good way to start this process whereas a cold bed would inhibit sleep.”

My take: I can’t think of anything more silly than a guy in a “bunny suit” warming my bed for me on the road.  Thanks, but not thanks!  This all sounds a little bit too much like something for a whacky party.  Which isn’t a bad idea: next time I have a party for a friend or a family member, instead of spending all my money on custom invites I think I’ll have a guy dress up in a fleece warming suit and do a fun show.  He could dance around the house in the suit and then later, during cake and ice cream and boring conversations about someone’s new garage flooring or who’s got the lowest car insurance quote, he can pop out of the suit wearing a sexy pair of vintage jeans for men and give my friends something to think about the next time they send out party invitations.

Carnival Cruise Lines Axes the Cougar Cabin

cruise4 Source: New York Daily News

Older women, and the younger guys out there who  adore them and, in some cases, prefer them to younger ones, have  lost at least one option for hooking up on the high seas. Seafaring “cougars” won’t be partying on Carnival again.

Carnival Cruise Lines turned down a request from a singles travel group to book a second cruise catering to over-35 women and the younger men – aka “cubs” – who want to date them, the Associated Press reports.

The group says their first cruise, booked on Carnival’s Elation in December, was a huge success, drawing about 300 people.

Carnival said there was no problem with that event, but they just don’t have room for groups with that “theme,” calling the cougar ban a business decision, according to the AP. Analysts say the stance is meant to protect Carnival’s focus on family fun.

But don’t worry, cougars – other cruise lines seem ready to welcome you with open arms. Party planners say they’ve had no trouble booking with rivals Norwegian and Royal Caribbean.

My take: I’m an older woman, not quite ready for the arm chair travel circuit and I love younger men.  I wouldn’t consider myself a “cougar,” but I’m all for a cougar cruise and I don’t necessarily mean for hookin’ up.  I’m not quite ready to shop for term life insurance quotes or revising my will, nor is my “age” set to jack up my current term life insurance rates or knock me into a new category for senior discounts.  But I am a savvy traveler and, if I’m going to spend my money on a cruise, I want to make sure that once I get on that big ship on the sea that I have a full line up of entertainment waiting for me.  That includes companionship and of course an option for a great place to be quiet, think, listen to the sound of the ocean and await the port of call.

Which reminds me: the last cruise I took I could have really used an extra suitcase.  Not for all the trinkets I picked up along the way, but for custom promo bags I collected from the ship and on land.  I have to admit, the plastic bags made great wrapping material for fragile mementos I gathered (not the boys!) and I also used them to wrap my shoes in.

Getting Around

Cruising to another country is great.  But what do you do once you get there if you need wheels for a long-term stay.  Check online and find out if your destination offers any local options or ways to buy junk cars for a temporary solution.  Make sure you can unload it later by asking if they also provide junk car removal services, too.

Dressing Up

Traveling outdoors means exposure.  There are a lot of excellent online companies specializing in heavy duty clothing for those colder destinations, sites where you can buy everything from work boots and flame resistant clothing, to snow-suits.  Also, think about one of the many good-quality Carhartt coats, hats, gloves, and even ski wear and high altitude adventure travel gear.
